Clint Eastwood heeft in zijn aanzienlijke carrière als regisseur beter werk (Bird, Unforgiven) afgeleverd, maar Bronco Billy, warm en hier en daar grappig, is toch moeilijk te weerstaan. Zelf speelt hij de vaderlijke directeur van een wat ranzig rondtrekkend wild west variété gezelschap dat slechte tijden doormaakt. De toekomst ziet er nog rampzaliger uit wanneer Billy een nieuwe assistente, de door haar bruidegom gedumpte, rijke erfgename Antoinette Lily (Locke) inhuurt. De verwikkelingen die volgen zijn voorspelbaar, maar het gekibbel tussen Eastwood en Locke, veelvuldige tegenspelers en jarenlang gelieven voordat ze in 1988 met veel herrie uit elkaar gingen, is aanstekelijk.

As the leader of a struggling Wild West show, Bronco Billy (Clint Eastwood) gives it his all to keep his entertainers' spirits high despite the declining public interest. While on tour, Billy encounters Antoinette Lily (Sondra Locke), a spoiled, newlywed heiress who was recently deserted by her scheming husband, John Arlington (Geoffrey Lewis). After some convincing, Lily decides to join the troupe as Billy's assistant but, much to the crew's displeasure, she seems to bring only bad luck.
